Tomb Raider – Second Movie Stalled

Production on the second film was actually starting to... tomb raider with Alicia Vikander back in 2019. Since then, the project has stalled and is not progressing.

Initially, it was the pandemic that brought production to a standstill, but now it's behind-the-scenes issues that are holding up the project. The second Tomb Raider film was supposed to be produced by MGM, which has since been acquired by Amazon. However, the project doesn't seem to be a priority there, so it remains to be seen whether it will ever be realized.

"I have no idea about the MGM and Amazon buyout. Now it's a kind of politics. I think Mischa and I were ready, so to be honest, it's in someone else's hands."

Licensing reasons for delay?

Further reports indicate that MGM has now lost the license for the film, which was supposed to be released by May of this year. Since then, there has reportedly been a bidding war among film studios, all of which are said to be very interested. At the same time, Alicia Vikander's role is apparently being reconsidered, and she will likely no longer be involved, if the reports are accurate.

Misha Green was launched in early 2021 still confirmed as director and for the script that was to follow the most recent trilogy, including Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb RaiderThe story of the two games was to be continued in this film, as well as a few events from the games themselves.

Whether anything will ever come of the film remains to be seen, as even the tomb raider-brand itself no longer belongs to Square Enix and recently joined the Embracer Group That doesn't necessarily make things any easier in the end.

The success of the first movie is nevertheless undeniable, having grossed a whopping 274 million US dollars.
