This morning, 2K Games announced the third-person shooter The Bureau: XCOM Declassified an, which was originally introduced as XCOM in 2010 and then completely disappeared into obscurity.
Following the release of an initial trailer, 2K Games has now revealed comprehensive details about the game and shown the first screenshots. With The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, they promise a completely new experience in the XCOM universe.
Set in 1962, at the height of the Cold War, The Bureau tells the story of the secretive XCOM organization's first encounter with a mysterious and dangerous adversary. Originally established as a covert defense against the Soviet Union, the Bureau now faces a threat unlike anything they have ever seen before.
As Special Agent William Carter, you lead a squad of agents in the secret war for the survival of humanity. While you are busy defending against the external threat, the Presidium is able to conceal the existence of the enemy in order to avoid global panic.
“We are thrilled with 2K Marine’s redefined version of The Bureau: XCOM Declassified,” said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "The game has evolved through a creative process, and the result is a story-driven experience that is smart, engaging, and challenging for players who think tactically."
"The Bureau tells the story of the mysterious beginnings of XCOM," added Morgan Gray, Creative Director at 2K Marin. "We have expanded the universe with a story of government conspiracy, told through tactical third-person gameplay."
In the spirit of the XCOM franchise, players must think and act tactically. The third-person perspective gives the player a sense of spatial awareness and grants them the freedom to seamlessly focus Carter's unique abilities on combat, thus enhancing the tactical shooter action. The Bureau also embraces the concept of permanent consequences. On the last line of defense, every command can mean the difference between life and death, whether for Carter, his squad, or humanity.
"The team has worked hard to implement core elements of XCOM, such as tactical decision-making and permanent squad member losses, in a purposeful way that makes it a unique and tactical shooter," Grey added. "As a result, The Bureau will challenge players like no other third-person tactical shooter has managed to do before."
The Bureau: XCOM Declassified will be released on August 23, 2013. Those who pre-order the game will receive a Codebreaker side mission as a bonus. In this mission, you must investigate an incident at a communications station responsible for intercepting and decrypting enemy messages, which is now unreachable.
