As has been suspected for months, Sony has just officially unveiled its own VR headset for PlayStation 4 at the GDC in San Francisco. announced.

The headset is Sony's answer to Microsoft's Kinect, which is expected to bring about fundamental changes in how we interact with video games. Both technologies, however, are still at a stage where they need to prove themselves, and in the case of Sony's VR headset, it will likely be something more for tech enthusiasts.

Further details about the VR headset are expected in the coming days.

(Update)

The first more detailed information and images of the VR headset are now available. A prototype, codenamed 'Project Morpheus', has been shown. The VR headset features a 5-inch display, shares many similarities with the Oculus Rift, and, thanks to its wide field of view and 1080p resolution, is designed to immerse the player in the world. The viewing angle is 90 degrees, and thanks to head tracking and a 1000Hz refresh rate, it can capture all head movements.

The headset works with the PlayStation 4 camera, the DualShock 4 controller, and PlayStation Move, which is expected to give it an advantage over the Oculus Rift. The 3D sound is also said to be perfectly simulated using multiple speakers. One headset can be connected per console, but additional headsets can be connected directly via an adapter, allowing you to have an audience.

Further technical details such as latency are currently unavailable, as this is a prototype and the developers want to gather feedback at GDC first. Several demos are available, including 'The Deep', 'The Castle', and 'Thief'.

The development of the VR headset has been in the works for years, according to Shuhei Yoshida, head of Sony World Wide Studio, who has even played God of War with it himself. His highlight was being able to look down at his body and appear as Kratos. Sony itself is developing a diverse range of games spanning all genres. Here, they see a clear advantage over Oculus Rift and, as a console manufacturer, an opportunity to popularize VR headsets, including among publishers.

No information has yet been revealed regarding when the VR headset will be released or how much it will cost.
