One year after release, things are quiet. Warhammer 40K: Space Marines 2 Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive are not resting on their laurels. Instead, they're announcing new content that will be available to players starting September 4th – with the Anniversary Update. A second year of free features will be accompanied by a new Season Pass, primarily offering cosmetic extras. But what exactly is on the roadmap, and what does it mean for the community?

Anniversary Update & Roadmap: New Modes, Classes and Enemies

The update marks the start of a new content phase, which, according to the developers, will extend over several patches into next year. The highlights are already clearly outlined in the trailer:

  • New PvP content including a fresh game variant and three new arenas.
  • A new playable opponent in PvP: the Chaos Helbrute, which should provide additional variety in the matches.
  • New enemies in PvE like the Chaos Spawn and the Mutalith Vortex Beast, which not only look impressive but also appear tactically challenging.
  • New Weapons – from Pyreblaster and Pyrecannon to Xenophase Blade and Power Axe.

As a special highlight, a new playable class is also being introduced: the Techmarine, equipped with unique abilities and gear. This should significantly change the dynamics of co-op gameplay, as Techmarines are considered masters of machines in the lore.

Cosmetic Upgrades: Season Pass 2

Simultaneously, Season Pass 2 launches, once again focusing entirely on customization. Nine new DLC packs are planned, offering additional armor, weapon skins, and emblems. Those who place particular importance on their Space Marine's appearance will have ample opportunity to further refine their look. Importantly, all gameplay-related content remains free, a clear policy that Saber and Focus emphasized at launch.

After about a year and millions of copies sold, it's clear: Warhammer 40K: Space Marines 2 Warhammer is far more than just a fan project for Warhammer enthusiasts. The Year 2 roadmap shows that the developers intend to actively keep the game alive, both for competitive and cooperative players. The introduction of the Techmarine, in particular, could significantly shake up the balance and the meta. However, it remains to be seen how regularly the announced content will actually be released and whether the PvP mode can maintain the necessary player base in the long run.

Ultimately, much depends on whether Saber can strike a balance between free content and cosmetic DLCs without splitting the community. So far, however, the plan looks like it has a solid foundation. Warhammer 40K: Space Marines 2 This should make it relevant for even longer.

I would buy a story DLC, as I enjoyed playing through the game and thought it was good. But this cosmetic stuff or multiplayer content leaves me completely cold.
