The closer the release of God of War Ragnarok The closer it gets to November, the more obvious it becomes that it won't be the great PS5 hope that everyone dreamed of at the time of the announcement.

Without question, God of War Ragnarok A great game that lives up to the 2018 reboot in every respect and will probably even surpass it. This is demonstrated by... the current previews Regarding the game. At the same time, however, it also became clear that Sony missed the opportunity to finally show what the PS5 is capable of. The initial enthusiasm for the console has long since faded, and current debates about the return of 30fps games make it difficult to rekindle that enthusiasm. The desire for a new-gen showcase is therefore more urgent than ever.

Let us recall the announcement of God of War III For the PlayStation 3 back then, the debut trailer alone caused true hysteria, even though it didn't reveal much about the game itself. It was simply the excitement and anticipation surrounding the technological leap from the PS2 to the PS3, and the fact that this mega-franchise had been chosen for it. In the end, it became a must-play title that defined the PS3 generation, just as it... God of War I & II as they did previously on the PS2. According to the premise: The best is yet to come, or when God of War Ragnarok for PC.

God of War Ragnarok
God of War Ragnarok

The PS4 has become a bothersome add-on.

Back to God of War RagnarokThe game, which was presented to the world in September 2021, was initially announced exclusively for PS5. Finally, a title that could flex its muscles on the hardware, just like Kratos. Or so the hope went, a hope that was quickly dashed. Sony reluctantly announced the cross-gen release on PS4 later on, after having repeatedly dodged the question beforehand.

What a cross-gen release means has long been known among gamers (and certainly Sony too) is well known – namely, making compromises and cutbacks in favor of weaker hardware. In the case of the PS4, a 10-year-old console and technology. Long since Developers admitthat this is indeed the case, and the differences are not only reflected in a lower resolution or frame rate. Sony Santa Monica itself speaks almost reservedly about the PS5 version of God of War Ragnarok and refers to these only as “The icing on the cakeIn contrast, they rave about the PS4 version, claiming to have extracted everything possible from it and mentally patting themselves on the back.

The icing on the cake, however, should have been the PS4 version, which is thankfully offered alongside it, albeit with certain compromises and downgrades, while the PS5 version should have been touted as having pushed the hardware to its absolute limits. What was once the norm is now being sold as a compromise. This is completely unacceptable, especially after initially promising a true next-gen title and now entering the third year of this generation.

Definition of next-gen missed

Whether the touted 120fps at low resolution, the accessibility options, or the obligatory DualSense features will live up to the PS5 hardware's capabilities is, based on past experience, certainly open to question. Instead, I would have preferred to see even more photorealistic graphics in 4K, ray tracing effects, and at least 60fps simultaneously. These are all features that were almost sacrosanctly touted for the PS5 back then. That would have been a real statement and would have been impressive on paper alone, much like the leap from 480p to HD-ready. As things stand, however, I think disappointment is perfectly justified later on. God of War Ragnarok It will not be released exclusively for PS5 on November 09th. You can still have fun with it, even if there's a lingering feeling that you haven't gotten the best possible version.

Amidst all the excitement, we shouldn't forget that Al Bundy scored 4 touchdowns in a single game in 1966, leading the Polk High School Panthers to the city championship. 🙂

I'm so excited for this game!
No other game series manages to achieve such good and brutal gameplay. You feel the impact in every move... Absolutely brilliant!
The mere fact that there is no GoW on Xbox makes the console redundant for me.

I'm as excited as a little kid. Even at the end of the first game, I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I got the platinum trophy and immediately did a "Give Me God" run with only three deaths. I've been a God of War fan since the first game, but the new God of War games are so much better, except for the lack of brutality. I just hope you don't only play as Kratos at the beginning and then only as Atreus. I'm praying to the game gods that Super Smash Bros. doesn't make a move like MGS2/TLOU2, otherwise, another IP is dead to me... I've already taken three days off.

Yeah, I also finished GoW 2018 on GoW. Lol, with that crappy PS4 at 30fps, the Pro already had jet engines x10. But the Spartan skin shield was worth it. I hope there's something like that in the second part too.

Of course there's a GoW on Xbox, maybe not the same game as on the Playse, but still a fine battle scene, just like GoW on Playstation 😉
To this day, I don't understand how one can criticize a console for not having the exclusive titles of its main competitor's console in its portfolio.

By the way, I've already presented it; my thanks go to the leakers who bought the game physically and finally put the information online.
Ah yes, thanks to Sony too, a proper gameplay showcase from you might have prevented this.
But that's no wonder when you always make your products secret, like area51.

Why are you even bothering with the leaks? It ruins the whole game and the anticipation. Sure, the marketing was questionable, and they could have shown more about the game, but spoiling the story? No way.

Everything's fine, Piller. Like I said, this information was important to me, the information I needed. Since The Last of Us Part II, I've been playing it safe.
I'm tough.

What's wrong with the people who bought The Last of Us Part II?
Following Druckman's statement "the leaks are not true, one should rather play it oneself"
And how I played it myself, or rather, how I paid for that crappy game. I would have preferred to donate the money to a charity.

Besides, you don't even know what I saw. Isn't it presumptuous of you to judge then? What constitutes a spoiler is subjective, especially since the game is over 70 hours long.

Yes, but a game isn't just cutscenes. I was interested in gameplay innovations, and since Sony didn't give a proper answer, I resorted to the leaks. And as I said, these are actually predictable leaks; it's not as bad as some people think. Sony's story trailer leaked more information.

Even with gameplay innovations, it's infinitely more exciting to experience them live than to already know what direction they're going in or which new weapon you'll get. Your arguments might just about hold water with games where you're unsure if you'll like them or where you're not convinced of their quality. Not here.
First of all, it's God of War, and that's always been awesome!!! And secondly, it's a sequel to the last game in the exact same setting. And since you've played it, you know roughly what to expect. So stop with your hypocritical comments 😉

What's your problem? I looked at the leaks, so what? Theoretically, it's my business, and I don't have to justify myself. Look, do you want to be spoiled or what's your problem? Be glad I bought the game; that's how Sony made €80. Again, leaks are subjective. For me, gameplay is more important, story is important, but as long as there's no TLO2 agenda in the game, I'm already sold on the story twists. I don't understand why I have to justify myself. Nonsense. You get criticized for buying the game. I don't ask you why you prefer game A to game B, or for whatever reasons you buy it or don't. At the end of the day, it's everyone's own decision. Do you ask FIFA and Call of Duty buyers why they buy them? Everyone should buy and consume what they think is right for them.

Calm down, buddy, take it down a notch... This is about GoW, not some random AC or run-of-the-mill multiplatform game.
You're rambling on about how gameplay is important to you, etc...
Gameplay has always been God of War's greatest strength! Your writing just doesn't add up... In that case, good night, you guys. 😉

What's wrong, do I need to go to bed? Ah, kid, you know what? With you fanboys, even less makes sense. Yeah, the gameplay was good with two weapons, applause. Do you even know how many weapons God of War 2 had, and therefore how much gameplay variety? Or Devil May Cry, no matter which one you choose, has more gameplay variety than God of War 2018.
And even Assassin's Creed has more weapon types and thus more variety. Always this fanboy drivel, my God, God of War isn't perfect, it has its weaknesses too. And using something with fire or ice alternately isn't even new and is taken from the DMC reboot or Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. Dante is Kratos' father, if you want to put it that way. I know you don't want to understand, but again, what's your problem? Buying the game isn't enough? Am I supposed to be grateful to Sony now or what? Everything's fine, I'm chill, I just don't understand why you're trying to refute my arguments.

Sometimes I wonder why the operator of this site runs a PlayStation site. Even God of War is met with fury, as is the PS VR 2.
Just make it a dedicated page and be done with it. Then I can easily delete the page from my favorites or bookmarks, because I'm not interested in the box or the hate directed at PlayStation.

This site only features PlayStation news, with very rare updates about the Xbox, and nothing at all about the Switch or PC.
Therefore, it is incomprehensible why this anger occasionally surfaces.

Criticism and anger are unrelated. We shouldn't make it too easy for corporations to make money. PlayStation has always been at the top for good reason (PS1, PS2, PS4), but enough is enough with the crap.

As Piller says, if Sony did everything right, there would be no reason for criticism. Besides, why is it always interpreted as anger? Have you ever considered that criticism can also be productive, preventing Sony from resting on its laudatory scrutiny? When you see something starting to drift in the wrong direction, it's the right, even the duty, of every PS fan to voice criticism of what matters to the brand. And the press should actually be the first to speak out, not just parrot everything the corporation says or pass it on unfiltered to us consumers. If you want to see unfiltered news and ride the hype train, then you can just subscribe to the official PS YouTube channel.
Look at GameStar, for example; every PS game is automatically hyped for them, while Xbox is always "meh".
Not a single public criticism of €80 games, consoles made more expensive, etc.
Nobody needs such so-called journalists who don't express any criticism.

Crydog

I mean, I understand why GameStar isn't very critical because they wouldn't get any more codes for previews; then they'd have to buy the games themselves for €80, just like us consumers. In this day and age, where everyone is connected to the internet 24/7, you can find the news you need yourself, or the publishers can spoon-feed it to you.
And GameStar knows this, which is why they are well-disposed and avoid causing offense as much as possible, so as not to develop bad relationships with Sony or any other publisher.

I agree, criticism only makes products better, and even though I love Sony, you have to be able to criticize things sometimes. There's plenty of criticism of other cross-gen games, so it makes sense to me for God of War.

Yes, the opening scene of GoW3 alone was a technical benchmark and good advertising for an instant PS3 purchase.
That's exactly what's missing in Ragna at the beginning. No doubt it will be a great game, and even better than the third installment (if only because of the third-person over-the-shoulder perspective), but it doesn't look like the leap from part 2 to 3. It looks like a consistently uniform experience. You could even call it DLC.

CryFront. I get the feeling some people here lost the fun of video games a long time ago.
I almost exclusively play PS exclusives and have had fantastic experiences over the past 10 years. Others seem to have been incredibly frustrated these last few years. Too bad, you've missed out…

I've been playing exclusively on PlayStation for 25 years, and I'm extremely annoyed with Sony. They could have easily launched the PS5 next year. Everyone needs to realize that this generation we'll only get 4K and 60 FPS at most in cross-gen games. With a current-gen game like A Plague Tale, we'll get a maximum of native 1440p at an unstable 30 FPS; the unlocked frame rate doesn't even reach 40 FPS. Only the PS5 Pro will deliver what Sony promised us for the PS5. God of War will definitely be Game of the Year.

Yes, Sony's custom software solution is better than RDNA 2. Let's see when your beloved Xbox with RDNA 2 even comes close to a God of War... Maybe in 2026.

Beloved Xbox? I know most of you have completely lost it, but are you telling fairy tales now too? I hate nothing more than Xbox and its business model. You're also incredibly stupid, it seems. The custom solution is just PR fluff. Just look at how well VRR performs against the Series X and how late it came, or how much better your supposedly amazing custom 1,5 RDNA performs against the Xbox's RDNA2 in Plagues Tale (and most other third-party games). My God, you're so stupid and gullible. And by the way, GoW:R is currently being heavily criticized for its lack of next-gen visuals LOL. Besides, what does a game have to do with the hardware? It depends on the developers and the budget LOL. (Also, have you ever seen the real-time video of Hellblade 2? We'll never see anything like that on the PS5.) Seriously, how uninformed do you have to be, and yet still think you know something? It seems like you two have a mental disorder.

And by the way, I don't think the Series X is a superior console at all; it's simply the better device in every respect except for the slightly slower SSD. I also believed Cerny's PR spiel about the supposedly super-fast and revolutionary I/O controller and the divine SSD that could take work off the GPU's hands. But in practice, as we see, it makes absolutely no difference, not even 4K at 60 FPS in cross-gen games (and in third-party comparisons against the Series X, the PS5 usually loses too), meaning games that were developed for the PS4 and slightly optimized for the PS5. Sony wanted to save money because they thought they were, and would remain, the market leader; only thanks to Microsoft does the PS5 have slightly over 10 TFLOPS, otherwise we'd be playing with an even worse 9,2 TFLOPS PS5.

Yes, I know, I'm just really disappointed with Plague 2.
In 2022, always 30fps + tearing.
I got through it, but it wasn't a pleasure.
Especially since my Samsung TV has this weird halo around the character at 30fps. A YouTuber even made a video about it, saying you shouldn't tell people they're supposed to be satisfied with that because it's a story-driven game (and he has a much better TV than me). Seriously, you can sell people these days potato GPUs with 9tfps as long as you make the PR spiel sound convincing. If we can't even get 1080-1440p at a decent 60fps, then I don't know what to say. Maybe you have to buy a different TV for every game so it runs smoothly \(•_•)/
