Wonder Woman – Bad news for fans

Monolith's Wonder Woman game is struggling with massive development problems and could be years away from release – or may never be released at all.

Fans of DC and Monolith Productions will likely have to wait a long time before they can step into the role of Wonder Woman can hatch. According to a new report by Jason Schreier (Bloomberg), the ambitious project "Years away from publication" – if it ever even appears. The development is clearly in crisis.

Millions invested – but where is the game?

The game was already released in December 2021. announced and should be done by the experienced developers behind Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor originate from these sources. However, behind the scenes, there seems to be a major crisis. Schreier's sources report massive development problems. a restart at the beginning of 2023 and a change in the leadership team. Despite reported costs exceeding $100 million, there has been little to no tangible progress – and even the once-celebrated Nemesis System was rejected.

Monolith originally wanted to Wonder Woman to explore new paths and that Nemesis System The original plan was for the heroine not only to fight enemies but also to befriend them. However, this ambitious idea has since been scrapped – instead, the developers are now focusing on a conventional action-adventure game.

A wasted decade?

The game's development history reads like a drama. Before Wonder Woman Monolith experimented for years with a new IP that was supposed to rely on procedural storytelling. However, Warner Bros. showed little interest in new universes and finally pulled the plug on the project – after three lost years.

The studio head at the time, Kevin Stephens, and most of the management team subsequently left Monolith and moved to Electronic Arts. What remained was a studio facing a new challenge – the Wonder Woman-game – confronted. But to this day, the chaos has not subsided.

Schreier's sources are skeptical whether the game will ever be released. Besides internal turmoil, technical problems are also said to be hampering development. Warner Bros. has not yet officially commented on the situation, but the signs are not good. DC fans should therefore prepare for a long wait – or perhaps even for the game to be canceled altogether. Wonder Woman or doesn't appear at all in the end.

Even if the game is released, it will be a flop. Batman, Spider-Man, and Wolverine are the heroes who appeal to the mainstream; all the others are for nerds and very niche in terms of target audience.
