The latest market data from the UK shows a drastic shift in market share between the current console platforms. While Xbox Series X|S sales increased by 12 percent last month, PlayStation 5 sales plummeted by half.
The British hardware market reacted immediately in May to the changed pricing structures of the platform holders. Following the increase in the recommended retail price for the PS5 to £570, Sony recorded a drop in units sold of exactly 50 percent. Microsoft capitalized on the resulting vacuum and increased sales of its own console family by 12 percent.
In absolute numbers, the PS5's traditionally large lead in the UK shrank to a historic low. Sony sold only 400 more units than its direct competitor during the period in question. The Nintendo Switch 2 remained the top seller for the month.
The primary driver for the temporary surge in Xbox Series X|S sales, besides its price advantage, was the release of "Forza Horizon 6". The racing game measurably stabilized hardware demand and presented a rare success for Microsoft.
In the UK, PS5 sales fell 50% in May. It only outsold Xbox Series S/X by 400 units (which saw a 12% rise, helped by console exclusive Forza Horizon 6). Switch 2 was easily No.1 (NielsenIQ). There will be more in today's The Game Business Show/Newsletter https://t.co/BVxmMuHZBh

Exclusivity and the reality of supply chains
This short-term success of the Xbox division is based on a strategic turnaround initiated under the leadership of new Xbox head Asha Sharma. After months of uncertainty and the blurring of platform boundaries through ports to the PS5, management is correcting course.
Sharma recently stated unambiguously clearThat a platform without exclusive content has no long-term viability. "Forza Horizon 6" provided empirical proof of this thesis in May. The game drew buyers into the ecosystem. Nevertheless, the community's fundamental skepticism remains. The loss of trust caused by previous multi-platform announcements also weighs heavily. Furthermore, a PS5 version of the racing game is still rumored for later this year.
Sony's price increase is therefore not an isolated phenomenon, but rather the result of exploding procurement costs for memory components in the consumer market. The global boom in artificial intelligence is tightening resources, something Microsoft cannot ignore indefinitely. For the upcoming console generation, internally developed under the codename Project Helix, this means the definitive end of traditional hardware subsidies.
Asha Sharma is already internally preparing the division for a premium model. A starting price of €699 or more is the logical consequence of collapsed profit margins for the next generation. The era of cheap gaming hardware is over.
The May report doesn't signal a changing of the guard, but rather a mathematical lesson in the market's price sensitivity. Gamers refuse to buy when the pain threshold for hardware prices is exceeded. For Xbox, the result is a much-needed sign of life, but one built on shaky foundations. Should management once again sacrifice the exclusivity of its own brands for short-term software revenue at the upcoming showcase, the current hardware effect will vanish immediately. A 400-unit lead for Sony merely demonstrates that PlayStation buyers are currently on strike. Nothing more.
