Xbox boss Asha Sharma plans to launch the next generation of consoles, codenamed Project Helix, for the 2027 holiday season. This is indicated in an internal memo from the CEO, which maintains the existing timeline despite the ongoing global hardware crisis.
Five times the storage costs strain the calculations.
The biggest hurdle for the next generation of hardware lies in the procurement markets for semiconductors. Sharma estimates in the memo that the expected costs for memory components will be five times higher than in the fall of 2025.
This explosion in purchase prices is hitting the sector hard. Most recently, the RAM and flash memory shortage has already led to subsequent price increases for the current PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2. Microsoft is thus facing a dilemma. Subsidized hardware sales in the hundreds of millions are hardly viable with these margins. The end-customer price will rise, even though recent [unclear] under 1000 EUR The speech was given.
Hybrid architecture breaks down the barriers to the PC.
Technically, Project Helix aims to finally eliminate the separation between console and PC. Microsoft confirmed at its initial announcement in early 2026 that the system utilizes native PC architectures to play PC games directly without any porting effort.
This fundamentally changes the entire market strategy. Console gamers gain access to stores outside the Xbox ecosystem, while developers only need to compile a single master version for the Windows and Helix ecosystems. Microsoft is keeping further specifications under wraps. Specific details will follow later this year as part of the Xbox 25th anniversary celebrations.
Project Helix seems set to launch in the 2027 holiday season despite the component shortage. The next-gen console will likely arrive on time, but it will be expensive. A launch price under €600 is unrealistic given the fivefold increase in memory costs. Anyone wanting the flexibility of a true PC console will have to start saving now.

There are rumors that the Xbox brand is to be sold.
