This news is unlikely to be well received by fans: Yakuza 0 Director's Cut appears on 8. December For PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC – owners of the original version are out of luck. No upgrade, no transfer of save data. Anyone wanting the new version will have to pay again.
New Director's Cut, same old story
The Director's Cut does bring new content, including additional cutscenes that conclude certain storylines and characters, as well as the Red Light Raid, an online co-op mode for up to four players. However, this mode will not be available at launch but will be added in a later update.
Furthermore, the game expands the roster to 60 playable characters, including various versions of Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima, as well as several antagonists. On the technical side, the PS5 version is optimized, including PS5 Pro support, resulting in improved resolution and performance.
For fans of the series, however, a bitter aftertaste remains: Who Yakuza 0 Those who already own the game on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or PC cannot upgrade to the Director's Cut version or transfer their old save files. In practical terms, this means you essentially have to buy the game twice if you want to experience the new content.
Between enthusiasm and frustration
The Director's Cut package is solid in terms of content. The new cutscenes do indeed add depth, and the upcoming Red Light Raid could make the co-op experience interesting. Nevertheless, the monetary aspect remains problematic. Sony and SEGA are opting for a "full-price re-release" strategy, which is particularly disappointing for fans who already bought the original version.
Players should therefore consider whether the new content is worth the purchase – or whether they would rather wait until Red Light Raid and further updates are available. Ultimately, the decision is a personal weighing of the balance between a full fan experience and fair value for money.
Yakuza 0 Director's Cut This is a technically and content-wise enhanced package of a classic. Newcomers will get a full action RPG experience. However, for existing customers, this move is annoying: double the cost without save data transfer – a clear drawback that shouldn't be overlooked.
