The extension "Claws of Awaji" for "Assassin's Creed Shadows" is already providing plenty of thrills. This will appear after the release of the game on March 20 and is available to pre-order as pre-order content. But this expansion is far more than just an additional chapter - it delves deep into dark, almost sinister waters. The planned journey to Awaji Island promises to combine the horror genre with the tried-and-tested adventure charm of Assassin's Creed to merge.
In a Interview with Game Rant Game Director Jonathan Dumont explained that "Claws of Awaji" is a continuation of Naoe and Yasuke's story, set after the events of the main game. The main game may have a "definitive ending", but the expansion opens up new dimensions - and the darkest atmosphere we've ever experienced in a game. Assassin's Creed-have seen the game.
Horror meets history
The island of Awaji, nestled in the Seto Inland Sea between Osaka and Tokushima, becomes the setting for this sinister episode. But what at first glance looks like an ordinary journey to fight a group of outlaws, the Sanzoku Ippa, turns out to be a dangerous adventure in a world steeped in darkness. This gang, known for their unorthodox tactics, always seem to be one step ahead of their victims and the players alike. According to Dumont, the Sanzoku Ippa are not only ruthless but also clever, using counter-intelligence methods to keep their opponents on their toes - much like the Assassins themselves. But the real threat lurks behind the winding paths of the island, and it becomes a game of fears for the players as they face their opponents.
"It will be a different atmosphere, a bit creepier", says Dumont. And "creepy" is more than just a light term: the expansion will not only confront us with deadly enemies, but also with an eerie sense of unease and menace. Unknown dangers from the shadows, eerie noises and a constant sense of persecution - Awaji could turn out to be the darkest island the Assassins have ever ravaged.
Expansion or a completely new experience?
It's clear that Claws of Awaji is no ordinary expansion. Dumont hinted that the premise is heavily based on the events of the main game and that players will not find easy entry points into this expansion. The story picks up immediately after the core events of the main game and takes us deeper into the dark machinations of the Sanzoku Ippa and the island of Awaji.
For fans of the franchise who are fascinated by the constant innovations and the ever-evolving world of Assassin's Creed this expansion should be a must-have. And who knows - maybe "Claws of Awaji" will not only be known for its gripping story and new enemies, but also for the way it integrates the horror genre into the Assassin's Creed universe.
Ubisoft has not yet announced any further expansions after "Claws of Awaji", but the developers plan to continue supporting the community with updates and consider options such as New Game+. March 20 will be a somber day for those looking forward to the adventure of "Assassin's Creed Shadows" to get involved.
