The rumors about a remaster of the original God of War-games for the PS5 have really taken off in recent weeks. But now Santa Monica Studio is causing disillusionment: at the upcoming event to mark the 20th anniversary of the series on March 22, 2025 there will definitely be no announcements. The studio made this very clear, dampening the hopes of many fans.
Speculation about a remaster
Expectations were fueled by Jeff Grubb, the notorious insider and journalist from Giant Bomb. He indicatedthat Sony would announce the confirmation of such a project "closer to" the anniversary. And what could be closer than a celebratory event on the 20th anniversary of the series? But hopes of a big reveal were dashed with a clear statement of the studio to X:
"With such an outstanding lineup and all the anticipation we have experienced around the anniversary, we want to make it clear that there are no announcements planned for this event."
Although this statement does not fundamentally rule out a remaster, it makes it unmistakably clear that the upcoming event will not serve as a stage for such an announcement.
What can we expect at the anniversary event?
Instead of a new version of the classic God of War-games, the anniversary will be celebrated with an art exhibition in Los Angeles and a panel bringing together voice actors from various parts of the series. The official promo page describes the event as follows:
"Discover an exclusive exhibition of tribute art, concept art and memorabilia highlighting the rich heritage of this incredible series. Don't miss the photo opportunities and other exciting activities that will immerse you in the world of God of War!"
Sounds nice, but for fans who were hoping for a remaster, this is certainly not the highlight they were hoping for.
Santa Monica Studio's choice of words at least leaves a small loophole open. The cancellation explicitly refers only to the event itself - an online announcement or a separate reveal at a later date are therefore not ruled out. But one thing is certain: anyone who is looking forward to a God of War-remaster will go home disappointed. Or at least have to console themselves with a nice art exhibition.
