Sometimes words reveal more than they should - especially when they are accidentally published. This is what happened with the upcoming gangster epic Mafia: The Old Countrywhich was apparently August 8, 2025 will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Curiously, this information does not come from an official trailer or press release, but from an inconspicuous Steam blog entry - although not in the English version.
While the English-language version of the blog post only refers to Hangar 13's developer panel at PAX East 2025, the localization teams in Latin America, Japan and other regions have apparently shown too much zeal: In these versions, there is very specific talk of a release on August 8 - including pre-order options on all platforms.
The original plan was probably to unveil the release date spectacularly at the panel on May 8 - including a brand new gameplay trailer and a look behind the scenes of the Mafia-series, from its origins to the future. Well, it's a shame - as we all know, the internet never forgets anything, and screenshots of the leak are already in circulation.
What can we expect from Mafia: The Old Country?
With Mafia: The Old Country Hangar 13 dares a courageous balancing act between linear storytelling and open world. Instead of checklist missions à la Ubisoft, the game promises a focused, narratively dense adventure - embedded in a small Italian town of the 1920s with a love of detail. The player takes on the role of a young Vito Scaletta, who - in the spirit of classic mafia dramas - must find his place in the criminal hierarchy between loyalty, violence and family honor.
The title thus returns to the roots of the series and says goodbye to the open-world overkill of previous years. This is a breath of fresh air in a genre that is increasingly losing itself in side activities and meaningless collecting tasks. Hangar 13 promises a dense atmosphere, cinematic cutscenes and an uncompromising narrative focus.
A leak with a double bottom?
Of course, one could speculate as to whether this "accidental leak" was really a mistake - or a cleverly placed PR tactic to really heat up the anticipation ahead of PAX East. After all, there's hardly any better publicity than a "leaked" date that makes the rounds at lightning speed.
Whether intentional or not - Mafia: The Old Country has our full attention. And expectations are high: after the mixed Mafia III it is up to this new chapter to win back the trust of the fans.
We can only hope that Hangar 13 does not accidentally stumble during implementation.
