Fans of the Resistance-series must continue to hope for a sequel. As the former CEO and founder of Insomniac Games, Ted Price, explained in the Kinda Funny Gamescast revealed, the studio had "Resistance 4" at Sony - but without success. The concept was promising, but ultimately failed due to unfavorable timing and market opportunities.
Market conditions were unfavorable
"Resistance 4, we offered that and it was a wonderful concept. It just didn't work in terms of timing and market opportunity, but it was the result of the passion of many team members at Insomniac to continue to build the story," Price explained. The Resistance series offers a fascinating alternative history world in which anything is possible with the Chimera. The studio has invested a lot of time in the background story and developed various ideas for the future.
Price himself was significantly involved in the first parts of the series as Creative Director. Looking back, it was an instructive time that brought the team many valuable experiences. He is also aware of the ongoing fan demand for a new spin-off: "We know they ask pretty regularly if we're making another Resistance game. There's no answer to that, but I will say that we suggested Resistance 4 and it was cool."
Future of the Resistance series uncertain
Whether there could still be a sequel in the future remains unclear. Price certainly hopes so: "I would like to see this story continue, it is very close to my heart." Resistance 3 was intended as the conclusion of a chapter to keep future possibilities open for the franchise. As Sony still owns the rights to the brand, there is still hope that Resistance could return one day.
However, Insomniac Games is currently heavily involved in Marvel projects. After the huge success of the Spider-Man games, Sony seems to be investing its resources primarily in this lucrative partnership. However, the high licensing costs - according to the famous Insomniac leak, Sony could have paid Disney around 109 million US dollars for the Spider-Man IP - could lead to Sony focusing more on its own brands again in the long term. This would at least give "Resistance 4" a theoretical chance of seeing the light of day after all.
