Sony has joined forces with People Can Fly for an as-yet unannounced video game, putting it in direct competition with Microsoft, which is using the studio for Gears of War: E-Day has been involved. People Can Fly has made a name for himself through his work on titles such as Gears of War: Judgment, Bulletstorm and Outriders made a name for itself. Now the studio's versatility is once again on display as it is not only working on an iconic Xbox series, but is apparently also working on a PlayStation game for Sony.
Secret Project Delta - Which IP is returning?
The new project, which an annual report which runs under the code name "Delta", is based on an existing IP and is being developed using the so-called "work-for-hire" model. This means that People Can Fly is producing the game on behalf of and according to the specifications of Sony. There is no official information about the specific IP being worked on, which has led to speculation among fans. Names like SOCOM, Warhawk or even Killzone are being touted as possible candidates, as they fit into the genre spectrum of People Can Fly.
After the rather mixed feedback on Sony's live service title Concord the company has apparently adapted its strategy. Whether Project Delta is a pure multiplayer title or a story-driven single-player game remains to be seen. In view of People Can Fly's previous work, an action-packed shooter with intense firefights and spectacular staging is conceivable.
Sony seems to be playing an overriding role in this project and will probably make the final decisions. Nevertheless, People Can Fly could benefit from Sony's funding and make full use of its creative strengths. If the studio is working on an existing franchise, this could be a great opportunity to revive a popular brand with state-of-the-art technology and new gameplay elements.
Xbox and PlayStation development under one roof
It is also interesting to note the parallel collaboration between People Can Fly and Microsoft on Gears of War: E-Day. The fact that a studio works on both Xbox and PlayStation exclusive titles is rather rare and shows how sought-after and flexible the company is. The future will show whether this model will catch on or whether People Can Fly will opt for one of the two platforms in the long term.
Until official details are released, there is room for speculation. If Sony really is reviving an old IP, this could be a significant step towards further strengthening the PlayStation brand with new yet nostalgic titles. Fans can look forward to seeing what surprises the studio has in store in collaboration with Sony.
