Sony Interactive Entertainment takes another big step into the future of gaming and announces the creation of a brand new first-party studio: Dark Outlaw Games. The studio is headed by none other than Jason Blundell, a luminary in the shooter scene and former mastermind behind the Call of Duty: Black Ops-series.
A new studio with a big vision
Blundell, known for his groundbreaking work on the zombie mode and campaign design of the Black Ops-title, revealed the existence of Dark Outlaw Games in a podcast hosted by Jeff Gerstmann. The studio has been working in secret for some time now, and even if no concrete details about their first project are known yet, the excitement is already palpable.
"I had the great opportunity to build a new studio for Sony within PlayStation Studios", explains Blundell is enthusiastic. "Dark Outlaw Games has deliberately stayed in the background, because for me it's the game that counts most, not the studio. We want to create something great before we talk about it."
This modest but focused approach could be a promising sign. After all, Sony doesn't start a new studio every day, and the decision to put Blundell at the helm as creative director points to ambitious plans.
"It's a great privilege to work with Sony on a first-party project"Blundell continues. "It's an honor and I'm incredibly excited."
Secrecy and high expectations
What their first game will be about, however, remains a well-kept secret. The studio is currently concentrating on building up a talented team and experimenting with fresh ideas. However, a new shooter under Sony is not out of the question.
"We test concepts, develop ideas and check what works. I'm a programmer at heart, so it's always about the question: Does it work? Is it fun?" explains Blundell.
He also makes it clear that after all these years in the industry, he is still driven by innovation and new challenges. "It's about putting another target on the wall. Creating something new, exciting or even dangerous that excites the players. That's what drives me every morning."
The gaming community remains curious to see what Dark Outlaw Games under the leadership of Blundell. Sony continues to pursue ambitious plans, and Dark Outlaw Games could play a crucial role in this future.
