In "Assassin's Creed Shadows", players take a journey through Japan during the Sengoku period, one of the most turbulent eras in Japanese history. The world of "Assassin's Creed Shadows" is characterized by its breathtaking, volcanic landscape, which not only impresses with its striking geographical contrasts, but is also deeply embedded in the country's history. This period, also known as the "Warring States Period", was characterized by almost a century of civil wars between regional clans. The landscape in which the conflicts took place has been recreated with the utmost precision by the developers at Ubisoft and offers an impressive visual experience.

The beauty of Japan's nature

The Sengoku period not only took place in the cities and castles of Japan, but also in the vast landscapes characterized by volcanoes. In "Assassin's Creed Shadows", the breathtaking nature of this region has been reconstructed with impressive attention to detail. The game world spans nine provinces in central Japan, each with unique geographical and cultural features. The graphics team has focused on giving each province its own visual identity, distinct from the others, to give players the feeling of truly traveling through this historic world. The volcanic landscapes, with their steep mountainsides and ash deserts, stand in stark contrast to the lush, green forests and tranquil rice paddies that are often at the center of the player experience.

Architecture and attention to detail

The developers of "Assassin's Creed Shadows" have not only focused on a visually impressive world, but also on meticulous accuracy in the representation of the architecture. According to Thierry Dansereau, the art director of "Assassin's Creed Shadows", every building in the game is based on real historical blueprints. The castles, which act as central points in the game world, were created in close collaboration with Japanese experts. This accurate representation of real buildings allows players to immerse themselves in history and get a real feel for the architecture and construction of the time.

The architecture team, led by Dominic Gladu-Despatis, also developed modular building kits that allowed the level designers to respond flexibly to different requirements. Castles, temples, upscale homes and humble villages - each structure is carefully aligned and contributes to the immersive experience. The textures the team used for the buildings reflect the craftsmanship of the 16th century and were developed based on intensive research into traditional Japanese building materials such as wood, plaster and ceramic tiles.

Traditional craft techniques and materials

One particularly fascinating aspect of Assassin's Creed Shadows is the depth with which the team went into texturing the buildings and natural environment. Dimitri Alexis, the lead material artist, explains that the team not only used modern techniques to create the textures, but also incorporated ancient Japanese craft traditions into the design. This includes the production of plaster, the coloring of ceramic tiles and wood preservation methods that are still part of Japanese architecture today. Every aspect of the textures, from the ageing of the surfaces to the discoloration caused by weathering, has been carefully matched to the historical conditions.

This attention to detail is not only evident in the buildings and cityscapes, but also in the natural environment. The game's biomes have been created with the same dedication and reflect the impressive interplay between nature and architecture in Japanese culture. The forests, mountains and coastal regions have been designed so realistically that they seem almost tangible. Players can experience the beauty of nature up close as they travel through the country.

Hideout and individualization

Another outstanding feature of "Assassin's Creed Shadows" is the so-called "Hideout". In this game, players can create their own personal retreat, which not only enriches the gameplay aspect, but also offers another dimension of personalization. With the help of easy-to-use building kits, players can create their own hideouts and improve them as they progress through the game. As players accumulate more and more wealth, they can equip their hideouts with more luxurious facilities and impressive buildings, adding a further creative twist to the game.

The "Hideout" is not only a practical place to rest and plan, but also an expression of one's play style and progression. Thierry Dansereau, the game's art director, describes this aspect as a way to strengthen player loyalty and give players the freedom to create their own unique retreats.

With "Assassin's Creed Shadows", Ubisoft has not only created another chapter in the popular series, but also a masterful work of historical and artistic design. The meticulous attention to detail put into the depiction of the architecture, textures and natural landscapes immerses players deeply into the world of Japan. With a constant emphasis on authenticity and historical accuracy, the game is not only a visual experience, but also an invitation to experience the history and culture of the Japanese archipelago in a whole new way.

"Assassin's Creed Shadows" will be released on March 20, 2025.
