Two years is half an eternity in the world of video games. Especially when you consider that Sony hasn't stepped onto the big stage in that time. Now the tide is supposedly turning: A new PlayStation showcase is imminent - or alternatively the next State of Play - at least if you believe the usual suspects from the rumor mill. But is there really anything to it? Or are we just seeing the annual repetition of collective hoping and tweeting?
Why the insider statements should be treated with caution
According to the so far rather mediocre reliable insider @DetectiveSeedswho has proven to be neither a notorious liar nor a prophet in the past, a PlayStation "show" is in the works. Whatever "show" means in this context. A showcase? A state of play? Or just a nicely edited YouTube trailer with dramatic music and lots of CG?
Accompanying this, the gaming aggregator @mrPyo1 with a cryptic "PlayStation Showcase" on X. And because this is apparently enough to fuel the community's imagination, the rumor mill has been churning at full speed ever since. Even Jeff Grubb, who has since become a walking oracle for everything to do with Xbox and PlayStation, threw summer 2025 into the mix as a potential timeframe in January. Well then.
Sony has a few games in the pipeline
But well, let's play the game: If this showcase really does take place - possibly in May or June - then we can supposedly expect a few old acquaintances. Including Bungie's enigmatic projects Gummy Bears and Marathonthe still mysterious Saros from the Returnal studio Housemarque, which pretty much More gameplay this year promises, of course Ghost of Yoteiand the infamous Fairgame$ and Marvel's Wolverine. Sounds impressive - if it weren't for the small problem that only a few games have been able to shine with even the slightest bit of fresh information in recent months.
Meanwhile, the PlayStation community is not exactly in a celebratory mood. Many criticize the still poor line-up that Sony has to show in the PS5 generation, if you leave out their remaster fetish. A new showcase could correct this picture - or make it even worse if all that ends up being shown are half-baked multiplayer experiments and promises of live service.
So until then, all we can do is wait, speculate and check X every few days. Maybe the big moment will come. Maybe it's all just another chapter in the book Hope dies last - Volume 5: Showcase Edition. We will see. At some point. Maybe.
