The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic-remake (KOTOR) has had a turbulent journey. Despite numerous reports of its cancellation, however, the project still seems to be alive and kicking - at least if the latest statements from Saber Interactive are to be believed.
Since the announcement of the remake on the PlayStation Showcase 2021 the project has gone quiet. There has been a lot of speculation in recent years, mainly due to the changing developer studios and Sony's silence. Now a new statement from Saber CCO Tim Willits has brought a breath of fresh air. In the social media affirmed he that "everything we have talked about is still under development".
Saber CEO Matthew Karch also confirmed that the game is still in the works. However, he did not want to reveal any further details - a statement that reassures and unsettles fans in equal measure.
A chaotic development process
Aspyr was originally supposed to remake KOTOR but in 2022 it became known that Saber Interactive was involved in the production. Shortly afterwards Saber took over the complete development of the game. When the studio parted ways with its parent company Embracer, it lost KOTOR its original publisher, which further increased the uncertainty surrounding the project.
Additional doubts arose when PlayStation removed the original teaser trailer from YouTube and social media posts about the remake disappeared. Rumors about the game being discontinued quickly spread. Later it turned outthat these deletions apparently only affected licensed music and did not mean the end of the project.
Saber Interactive is one of the largest independent developers in the world. We are working on numerous games across many different genres. Everything that we have talked about is still in development. We will share information on upcoming games when we have something cool to...

Sony keeps a low profile
The role of Sony raises another question mark. While the company once presented the remake as a PlayStation exclusive, there are reports that Sony no longer wants anything to do with the project. However, there is no official confirmation of this.
Despite all these developments, the game was still in production in September 2023, according to earlier reports. Now it has been emphasized again that KOTOR is still in the works - but whether or when we will see it again remains uncertain.
The latest statements from Saber Interactive give fans at least a small glimmer of hope. But without tangible evidence such as a new trailer or official statements from Lucasfilm Games, the future of the remake remains uncertain. Until then KOTOR a game caught between hype, frustration and hope - a true test of patience for all Star Wars fans.
