The next "Resident Evil Remake" may already be in the works - but it might not be the part that most fans are expecting. The community has been speculating for months about which game Capcom will polish up next. The logical conclusion: "Resident Evil 5". After all, one remake has so far followed the next in chronological order. But a new leak throws this theory completely out the window - and even leaves out Resident Evil Zero.
The origin of the leak: Reddit, selfies and a wink
The source? Well - let's just say it's ... expandable. On Reddit a user posted a photo of himself with Nicole Tompkins, the voice actress for Jill Valentine. According to the post, the fan asked her directly at an event: "Do you want to play Jill again in the Resident Evil 1 remake?" Tompkins' supposedly telling reaction: a wink.
So a wink. No "yes", no "no". No NDA, no revelation - just a facial expression. And yet that's all it takes in the Resident Evil-community to fuel wild speculation: Is Capcom working on a new remake of "Resident Evil 1"?
A comeback to the Spencer mansion? Maybe. Maybe not.
Of course, Tompkins could just want to be nice - what's she supposed to say to a fan without jeopardizing her career? On the other hand, why wink if there's nothing to it? Many consider the small detail a clear indication that Capcom is revamping the iconic Spencer mansion for a new generation of gamers.
But caution is advised. So far, Capcom has neither confirmed the next remake nor commented on the rumors. In addition, there currently seems to be "Resident Evil 9" to have priority, even if the project is still is a long time coming. This means that even if a remake of part 1 is in development, we probably won't see any of it for a long time yet.
Whether it's a leak or an air number - Nicole Tompkins' wink is definitely a talking point. If the suspicion is confirmed, we may be in for an atmospheric trip back to the roots of survival horror. And who knows - maybe "Resident Evil 1 Remake" will be the remake that nobody had in mind but everyone wants to play.
