But Bethesda and developer Virtuos are now impressively proving otherwise - and faster than you can say "Daedra": The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is available immediately, only a few days after all the leaks. And yes, it is more spectacular than we had hoped.
Unreal Engine 5 instead of nostalgia filter
What Bethesda delivers here with Virtuos is not a simple polish. Oblivion Remastered was completely redeveloped in Unreal Engine 5. Not a single asset was left untouched. Every tree, every temple, every sword hilt has been reconstructed from the ground up. The shadows are more realistic, the faces less puppet-like, and Cyrodiil now actually looks like a living place - not like a museum piece from 2006 with a mod patch.
Todd Howard himself calls the game has a "decisive moment" for Bethesda. And he's right. Oblivion was the title that turned a niche RPG into a global brand. Now it is returning - but not as a mere monument, but as a reinvented vision for current hardware.
Nostalgia meets comfort

This new edition shows how a remaster should be: respectful, in love with detail and yet brave enough to rethink everything. Those who have never visited Cyrodiil now have no excuse. And those who have been there before will not recognize it - in the best sense of the word.
