Former PlayStation manager Shuhei Yoshida has raised the question of the next PlayStation console in an interview and caused quite a stir in the process. While Sony's technical roadmap remains a big secret, Yoshida gave an exciting insight into his personal thoughts on the future of gaming hardware. The 2028 date for the PS6 seems "right" to him. But what does that actually mean and why does this year in particular feel so right for Yoshida?
PS6 not until 2028?
First of all, the question arises: What are the reasons for a release in 2028? The last PlayStation, the PS5, was released in November 2020, breaking Sony's established pattern of introducing a new generation after around seven years. According to Yoshida, 2028 would be in line with the previous rhythm and would therefore feel "more right" than a year earlier - the previously planned release in 2027.
However, Yoshida emphasized that he had no insider information on the PS6 and is merely speculating on the basis of the previous time frame. Nevertheless, it seems plausible that Sony is working in a direction that is not too far removed from the previous timeframes.
Pandemic has slowed down generation
It becomes particularly exciting when Yoshida mentions the possibility that the PS6 and the new Xbox console could possibly be released in the same year. This could take the rivalry between the two platforms to a new dimension. Microsoft could also opt for a 2028 release, which would really heat up the dynamics of the console wars. However, it is currently assumed that the next Xbox much earlier, namely in 2026will be launched on the market.
But what makes this scenario even more exciting? Yoshida also gives an interesting review of the impact of the pandemic, which he says is "the current generation is slowing down" have. The production problems caused by the coronavirus crisis could therefore have delayed the schedule of the PS5 and other consoles, paving the way for a noticeable delay to the next generation.
Whether 2028 will actually be the year of the PS6 remains to be seen. With the PS5 Pro Sony has rejuvenated the current generation somewhat, but its potential is far from exhausted. With the latest games announced at State of Play we have exciting months and years ahead of us.
However, with the prospect of new, advanced technologies such as AMD's 3D stacked chips and a possible collaboration with Project Amethyst, the future of the PlayStation console is set to be one of the most exciting in recent years. Because a new era of gaming hardware is probably already in the starting blocks.
