Sony's ambitious initiative to publish PlayStation-exclusive titles for the PC once again has a sobering outcome in 2024. While the company has increasingly focused on the PC market in recent years, there is a lack of Valve's year-end review of the best-selling games There is no trace of Sony's titles on Steam. A clear disgrace when you consider how many of the titles in the "Platinum" category rely on multiplayer strength and strong hype - areas in which Sony actually wanted to establish itself.
The competition dominates
The greatest success was achieved by Helldivers 2which, however, is not a Sony production. Also Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and Baldur's Gate 3 are among the platinum titles and dominate with a strong player base and positive feedback. They also shine Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Black Myth: Wukong and the still popular Elden Ring thanks to the extension Shadow of the Erdtree. Sony's PC titles, on the other hand, do not appear in the top 10 or in the gold, silver or bronze categories - a clear indication that the PlayStation brand has not achieved the breakthrough on Steam that was hoped for.
Sony released some of their renowned titles last year, including God of War Ragnarok and Horizon: Zero Dawnfor the PC. However, neither the timing nor the strategic placement could compete with the strength of the aforementioned brands. Instead, dominance in the PC sector remains with studios that are traditionally strong in this segment.
PC strategy to be continued at all costs
The lack of PlayStation exclusives in the sales charts raises questions about the future of Sony's PC offensive. With the market for triple-A games on PC growing year on year, Sony would do well to focus more on cross-platform strategies rather than half-heartedly reworking its exclusives. The success of games like Palworld or Black Myth: Wukong shows that innovation and early engagement could be the key. But therein lies the problem. PC ports come out much later and the gamers who are really interested will probably have played on PlayStation by then. So you could call the PC conversion a labor of love in vain, even if it only serves to broaden the audience and increase sales.
The next PC conversion will be Marvel's Spider-Man 2 be. But even that is already outdated for reasons of topicality and the next possible false start. Perhaps Sony will have better luck with the Xbox, on which more formerly PlayStation-exclusive games are to be released in 2025, including LEGO Horizon Adventuresif the rumors are true.
