So that was it. Monolith Productions, the studio behind the acclaimed Shadow of Mordor-series, is history. And with it, the under development Wonder Woman-Gamewhich was apparently not even remotely in a playable state. WB Games pulls the plug before any more money flows into the project - over 100 million dollars have already been sunk. But why?
One of the main problems is said to have been the integration of the Nemesis system. Monolith's innovative feature, which gives enemies a kind of memory, simply didn't fit in with Diana's adventure. A reboot without this system? Too late, said Warner Bros. Discovery. However, the cancellation not only affects the studio, but also fans who were finally looking forward to a solo game with the Amazon warrior.
Batman. Batman. And even more Batman.
Who is in the comment columns of Reddit & Co. you see one thing above all: frustration. "We simply get nothing", is how one user sums it up. Because while Wonder Woman falls by the wayside, Batman remains the undisputed favorite of WB Games. "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League" was a crash landing, and what does WB Games do? Remorsefully returns to Batman.
"Another Batman game? What a surprise!" comments one user sarcastically. "I bet in ten years there will be more Batman games than McDonald's branches." And WB Games CEO David Zaslav makes no secret of this: the company's focus is on safe brands such as "Hogwarts Legacy", "Mortal Kombat" - and of course Batman.
Diana, the eternal supporting character?
The decision is particularly bitter because Wonder Woman has always led a shadowy existence in video games. Sometimes as a supporting character in Suicide Squadtimes as part of an ensemble in Injustice - but your own AAA game? Not a chance. Yet the character's potential would have been enough to make it a real hit.
However, WB Games only seems to cling to what is guaranteed to bring in millions. Financial flops in recent years have made the company more cautious - and Diana Prince is falling by the wayside. But while Batman continues to flutter through Gotham, only one thing is certain for Wonder Woman fans: Patience remains the hardest superpower.
