Sony has worked with Days Gone Remastered for the PS5 announced another remaster of an older title that is dividing fans. What sounds like a high-quality upgrade at first glance leaves many with a lot of questions and, above all, a good deal of skepticism. Is this really what fans were expecting? Or is it ultimately just a sham that benefits from the hype of the remaster wave?
A quick remaster for profit?
First of all, it must be said that Days Gone still looks pretty contemporary despite its age. The optimized PC version has taken the game to a new level with a better resolution and a more stable frame rate. The game also benefits from the more powerful PS5 hardware without much intervention. If you now think about the remaster for the PS5, the question arises: Has the PC version simply been backported and adapted to the PS5 hardware? The answer may sound unpleasantly familiar to many - minimum effort, maximum profit.
The PS5 Pro version presumably runs noticeably better than the standard PS5, which suggests that the remaster benefits from the new system's more powerful hardware alone. But is this really a remaster, or a simple transfer? Many in the Reddit community see it very similarly and consider the remaster to be completely unnecessary. "Why a remaster when the game already looks good?", some are asking themselves. It seems as if Sony is simply rehashing existing material and selling it as something new - a method that is not only dubious, but also views the player as an uncritical buyer.
Feature implementation is like a routine
The implementation of the DualSense controller and the additional accessibility options are certainly nice features. But are they really a revolution? These functions are now so well established that they are more routine than a real innovation. So one wonders whether the effort that a "real remaster" would have deserved has been made here at all, or whether the opportunity has simply been exploited to reach a newer target group.
The "new" content of the remaster is largely based on recycled material. Reddit users compare this to EA's annual FIFA series - a small change, but essentially everything remains the same. And at a hefty price of 50 euros. For 10 euros as an upgrade, this can certainly be overlooked, but the limited improvements so far make the whole venture look like a half-baked quick fix. The development of Sony Bend's live service title has been recently stopped surprisinglyand now it is obvious that they are playing it safe by hastily throwing a little recycled material onto the market.
Hoping for a convincing reason
Of course, one could still hope that Sony might have one or two graphical surprises in store, as seen recently with "Horizon", where the remaster actually offered added value. But so far there have been no official announcements about this - which makes the whole thing seem even more suspicious.
In the end, the question remains: Does this remaster have any real added value for players? The answer is doubtful. A God of War Remaster or a Bloodborne Remaster would undoubtedly have generated significantly more hype. Both titles are among the iconic games of the PS3 and PS4 era that have left a lasting impression through both their outstanding game mechanics and their epic storytelling. Such a remaster would not only have expected technical improvements, but also new content and deeper adaptations to the PS5 hardware - and that would have been a real added value.
And even if the game looks quite good, for 50 euros that's not really a convincing reason to pick it up again. Those who are interested in Days Gone is still well served with the PS4 version on the PS5, but for many it might not be worth more than 10 euros for the upgrade. Fortunately, the price for the PS4 version was quickly adjusted to make this difficult decision easier for you.
