Video games could soon cost up to 100 dollars - at least according to one investment analyst. Games like GTA 6 would take center stage in order to save the industry. His thesis? A drastic price increase could lead the recently stagnating games industry out of the crisis. But not everyone shares this view.
Analyst disagrees with price increase
Daniel Ahmad, a renowned analyst at Niko Partners, disagrees. In a post on X he makes clear: "A price increase is not necessary, and I would be surprised if it happened." Ahmad argues that Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Gamesthe publishers of GTA 6thanks to the gigantic income from GTA 5 and GTA Online financially secure that higher prices are simply not justified.
Interestingly, Ahmad even sees the possibility that Take-Two could lower the price - theoretically. "If anything, they could afford to lower the price to attract more players", he explains. Although this is unlikely, but in view of the massive income from GTA Online and planned pre-order bonuses, a price increase is unnecessary. Many players are prepared to pay more for special editions anyway.
Why 100 dollars is not a solution
The idea of raising video game prices to 100 dollars may seem tempting at first glance in order to stabilize the industry. However, critics such as Ahmad point out that such a move could be counterproductive. Higher prices could deter the already price-sensitive player base and reduce sales figures. Instead, targeted offers and a focus on long-term monetization - for example through microtransactions and DLCs - could be a more sustainable solution.
So anyone who feared that GTA 6 can breathe a sigh of relief for the time being. Pricing remains a hotly debated topic. The industry certainly needs to adapt in order to meet the challenges of the market - but this is not always possible through price alone.
Other developers and publishers are probably already Have beads of sweat on your forehead: GTA 6 could suck the market so mercilessly dry that there will be room for their titles in the grab bag at best. So it's no wonder that only brave indie studios or particularly optimistic calendar planners will probably dare to release anything near the planned release date of fall 2025. We'll see whether the panic is justified or just a storm in a teacup in the end - assuming that is, GTA 6 comes in time at all.
