PS5: A few more years until retirement - or rather the forgotten average?

The PS5 has not yet had its day. With new blockbusters and a long service life, it could even last longer than many think - but how long really?

It's hard to avoid the temptation to think about the PlayStation 6 when the rumors are getting louder and louder these days. But before you start looking at your PS5 with a sad look on your face and mentally retiring it, let's pause for a moment and ask the question: How much longer will the PlayStation 5 be relevant? According to the latest rumors, Sony could launch the PS6 in 2027. Even ex-Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida expects the next generational leap in the following year at the latest. But don't panic - the PS5 still has a lot to offer, and its journey is far from over.

A solid horse in the race or just a temporary solution?

First of all: consoles live not only through their hardware, but above all through the games that appear on them. And Sony knows how to develop games that will keep fans hooked for years after release. While the PS5 has produced some great titles in its lifespan, there are still some real smash hits to come. "Saros", "Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet", "Fairgame$" (okay, maybe not the biggest hit) and the promising "Marvel's Wolverine" - these titles have the potential to keep the PS5 relevant for a long time to come. So the really exciting question is not how long the PS5 will be available in physical retail, but how long it will continue to be used as the preferred console for major releases.

It is unlikely that Sony will retire the PS5 overnight. Because what many people don't consider is that even if the PS6 comes in 2027/28, the PS5 will probably still be supplied with new games for at least another two years. In the world of consoles, eight to nine years is a long time.

Of course, you could argue that the PS5 hasn't achieved the same cultural significance as the PS4. The PS4 was a real phenomenon, while the PS5 has established itself more as a solid, if less revolutionary, console. But let's be honest: who would complain about a good, stable device with a great selection of games? Even if it doesn't become the "long runner" that we are used to from the PS4, the PS5 has the potential to be with us for a long time to come.

Will the PS5 really remain relevant for years to come?

However, the future is not only dependent on hardware, but also on the competition. The Xbox Series X has established itself as little more than a serious challenger, and with rumors of the PlayStation 6 and a possible PS6 handheld the gaming ecosystem could soon be moving towards new, exciting developments. But it is precisely this competition that could encourage Sony to give the PS5 more time - after all, the next generation could not simply focus on hardware, but also compete with the PS6 and beyond with clever technology and fresh ideas.

To summarize: The PS5 still has many years ahead of it, mainly because the upcoming games and continued support from Sony will keep the console relevant for a long time to come. It may never become the legend of the PS4, but that doesn't mean it was a flop. It could establish itself as a solid gaming tool that will be with us for many years to come - maybe not forever, but for a long time.
