The yesterday's announcement by Sony's Mark Cerny and AMDThe decision to implement the advantages of FSR 4 in the PS5 Pro's own PSSR solution in the future caused a real rush of enthusiasm among users overnight. This could finally give the console the hoped-for performance boost that many had expected from the outset.
A central highlight is FSR 4, a new ML-based upscaler that competes with Nvidia's DLSS. The quality of the scaling has been significantly improved, which is evident in initial tests. But perhaps the biggest surprise: AMD confirmed that FSR 4 is the result of a collaboration with Sony. emerged within the framework of Project Amethyst.
FSR 4 & PSSR: Sony's secret weapon for the ultimate graphics quality
Mark Cerny was enthusiastic: "The FSR 4 neural network and training recipe are the first results of our collaboration with AMD. The results speak for themselves: it is a hugely advanced approach that can surpass the sharpness and detail of PSSR." The declared aim is to provide a very similar technology for the PS5 Pro. Ray tracing also appears to play a role in the cooperation. AMD's new Toyshop demo shows path tracing supported by ML-based technologies.
The reactions in the community were not long in coming. Many players finally see this as the final reason to buy the PS5 Pro. Although the new technologies will not be available before 2026, there are already signs of enormous advantages over the competition, in particular for current titles such as Assassin's Creed Shadowswhich offers a wide range of graphics and ray tracing modes.
The comments on Reddit & Co. are overflowing. One user writes: "This is great news for image quality nerds like me, lol. The article also mentions working more closely with developers to integrate PSSR into their games. Nvidia does this a lot in the PC space and gets great results. I'm excited for the future of PSSR!"
Another adds: "Up until the PS5 Pro I was mainly an Xbox guy, but the way Sony is going with the realization that these software upscalers are the future lets me know that the PS6 versions of games will be much better than on Xbox."
Performance leap or marketing hype?
Of course, there are also some concerns. Although Sony is working on an equivalent technology, PSSR is not the same as FSR 4. Rather, both systems appear to benefit from each other, although FSR 4 is still likely to have the edge as an independent technology.
Specifically, this means that FSR 4 itself cannot be run directly on the PS5 Pro due to the ML hardware used. This is presumably due to the fact that AMD had not yet determined its exact ML acceleration when the PS5 Pro design was already finalized. So Sony took a stab at it themselves, while they could work more closely with AMD on the next generation to achieve the same acceleration in RDNA4/5 and PS6. In the meantime, Sony could be working on "porting" parts of AMD's new CNN to the PS5 Pro.
The bottom line is that the PS5 Pro seems to be making a significant leap in performance with this update. This could significantly change the current generation of consoles and offer gamers the opportunity to stay on the PS5 Pro for longer without having to switch to the PS6 immediately.
