The hope of a comeback for the Resistance-series has been smouldering like a faint ember for years. But with the latest plans from Nightdive Studios, dare to remaster old PS3 and Xbox 360 titlesthis flame could be rekindled. Because when a studio known for its high-quality remakes of classic shooters sets its sights on the PS3 era, "Resistance" suddenly moves back into the realm of possibility.

Nightdive enters the PS3 era

Up to now, Nightdive Studios has mainly concentrated on PC and early console games. With titles such as System Shock Remake, Turok and Quake II Remastered the studio has made a name for itself as a specialist in careful but technically impressive remakes. But with the latest announcement that they will also be remastering PS3 and Xbox 360 titles for the first time, they are breaking new ground.

The PS3 generation is notorious for its complex architecture, which has so far made ports and remasters difficult. The fact that Nightdive is now taking on this challenge could be a decisive door opener for many forgotten classics - including "Resistance".

Resistance - A forgotten PlayStation giant

Insomniacs Resistance: Fall of Man (2006) and its two sequels are among the best exclusive titles of the PS3 era. The mixture of dark alternative history, nasty Chimera aliens and creative weapons ensured a loyal fan base. But while other shooter series such as Killzone at least received a collection for the PS4, Resistance has been lying dormant since 2012.

There has often been speculation about a return - be it as a remaster, reboot or even a new game. Insomniac itself seems to be busy with Marvel projects at the moment, and Sony is reluctant to revive the brand. But an external remaster expert like Nightdive could be just the right solution.

What makes the series so special is the fact that Sony and Insomniac Games themselves have not yet dared to make new editions of the shooter series. Unlike "The Last of Us", for example, "Resistance" remained stuck in the PS3 generation.

Why Resistance now has a chance

  1. Nightdive is looking for new projects - Now that they are considering PS3 remasters, worthwhile candidates are needed. Resistance is a PlayStation-exclusive brand with nostalgia factor and shooter potential.
  2. Ideal time - The PS5 offers enough distance from the PS3 generation to make it appealing to both former fans and a new target group.
  3. Fans have been demanding it for years - Resistance has a loyal community that regularly calls loudly for a remaster. The success of "Quake II Remastered" shows that the demand for classic shooters is there.
  4. Sony open to remaster - With projects such as The Last of Us Part I or the numerous PS5 upgrades, it is clear that new editions are an integral part of Sony's strategy.

Hope of a return?

Whether Nightdive could actually be working on "Resistance" remains speculation at the moment. However, the announcement to include PS3 and Xbox 360 titles in the portfolio is an exciting step. Sony could see this as a cost-effective way to bring back an old brand with minimal risk. And if Resistance is one thing, it's a forgotten diamond in shooter history. After all, a recent Updated trademark protection entry shows that Resistance still exists in the minds of Sony. But that can also mean everything or nothing.

Until then, we can only hope that Nightdive or Sony recognize the potential - and that we will soon be able to beat the Chimera with their own weapons again.

Would you be happy about a return of "Resistance"?
