Sony and blockbuster games were once synonymous. For years, the publisher delivered one hit after another, from "Uncharted" to "The Last of Us" and "God of War". But lately? Well, let's just say the euphoria has died down a little. Perfect timing, then, to come up with a remaster of the "God of War Collection" to bring back memories of glorious times - and perhaps win back the trust of the fans.
Why a God of War remaster fits right now
Sony is currently going through a strange phase. The PS5 may be a sales success, but big exclusive games are in short supply. While Xbox is experimenting with Game Pass and Nintendo is happily selling its Switch long-running hits, Sony's strategy remains unclear. The next big blockbuster is a long time coming. In this gap, a "God of War Collection Remaster" could be just the thing - not only as a nostalgia trip or as a memento of the 25th anniversary of the series, but also as a reminder of what Sony once stood for: absolute premium games non-stop.
The last adventure of Kratos, "God of War Ragnarok" was an emotional conclusion to the Nordic saga. However, many players who only started with the newer parts (including me) have never experienced the original adventures on the PS2 and PS3. A high-quality remaster of the "God of War Collection", i.e. the first two games, would be the perfect opportunity to get both new and old fans excited about the series again.
Nostalgia meets modern technology
Of course, the classic "God of War Collection" is already available for PS3 and PS Vita, and part 3 as a remaster for PS4, but let's be honest: a complete remaster collection of all games with polished graphics, 4K and DualSense support and perhaps even minor gameplay improvements could make the old games shine like never before. The brutal battles and epic boss fights in particular benefit from a smooth frame rate and modern technology. If Sony gets it right, this remaster should be a complete success.
Sony urgently needs good PR that goes beyond pure business figures. The Controversies surrounding live service gamesThe lack of first-party blockbusters and the wait for upcoming exclusive titles are making fans nervous. The PS5 generation is already considered wasted in parts. A "God of War Remaster" would therefore be a smart move: it creates anticipation, costs less to develop than a completely new game and keeps the brand fresh until the next big hit arrives.
A must-buy for PS5?
If Sony is indeed working on a "God of War Collection Remaster", this would be a smart move both in terms of timing and as a gift to long-time fans. The mixture of nostalgia, modern technology and clever marketing could not only delight old fans, but also attract a new generation to the series. We can only hope that Sony picks up the ball - and doesn't fob us off with a half-hearted port. And these days, a remaster is often the harbinger of a brand new game.
